December Self-Care Challenge Day 8: Make Your Bed

Make my bed? Huh? Emily is NOT my mom so why is she telling me to do something so simple for self-care?

Well, my friends, in a survey of 68,000 people by Hunch.com, 59 percent of people don’t make their beds. 27 percent do, while 12 percent pay a housekeeper to make it for them. Here’s what disturbed me: 71 percent of bed makers consider themselves happy; while 62 percent of non-bed-makers admit to being unhappy.

According to Psychology Today, bed

makers are also more likely to like their jobs, own a home, exercise regularly, and feel well rested, whereas non-bed-makers hate their jobs, rent apartments, avoid the gym, and wake up tired. All in all, bed makers are happier and more successful than their rumple-sheeted peers.

Navy Seal William H. McCraven encourages graduates to make their beds, claiming that “it will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task, and another, and another, and by the end of the day that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed.”……. Therefore, making the bed can help us feel more productive and in control of our routine.

Professional organizer Andrew Mellen suggests that regular organization in your lifestyle can help to prevent emotional clutter. Physical clutter such as an unmade bed can often be a very concrete representation of some emotional clutter or some difficulty that you are facing. What Focusing your life on physically organizing your space can help ensure that you can stay more focused and less overwhelmed.

So, to break it down into one of my beloved lists…

7 Reasons to Make Your Bed Today

1. Give you a sense of accomplishment/pride

2. Feel less overwhelmed in life generally

3. Cause mom said to do it

4. Elevates emotional clutter

5. Creates a positive state of mind as you go to bed

6. Leads to other good habits

7. Gain control of your Environment

If you are not someone that regularly makes their bed each day, try it today for a week and see just how it changes your perspective. As you start to eliminate more physical clutter throughout your home, you may be able to see greater success in other aspects of your life.

Happy Bed making my friends!
