In the Basket

In this segment I am sharing some acquisitions and tools that I have found useful not only in my knitting and crocheting but in my everyday life as well.

  1. Fashewelry 54.68 yards of hollow pipe rubber cord 2mm. $`10.98 on Amazon. I got this as I was searching for try it on tubbing and while I want and love supporting small businesses I could not justify the price sellers were selling it for when I could buy 30 times the amount for the same price. Now I have a large roll of what we call try it on tubbing for my sweater work that will last, conceivably, my entire knitting career.

  2. 200 g Fresh Dried Lavender buds. Each year I replace my current lavender bud sachets I have in all my yarn storage bins as well as each of my clothing drawers with a new fresh batch. This is a great rodent and bug repellent from our beloved yarn and wile it does take an afternoon to replace and is a tad messy, it is well worth it to protect my well curated yarn stash.

  3. Red Heart Super Saver - I splurged and got about 7 new colors in red heart. I really enjoy the yarn for toys and fun things to give to other people especially since I don't need to worry about care instructions in the giving of the items.

  4. 6 skeins! of Romney worsted Spun yarn from a friends ranch in Wyoming.

Roaming and Foraging

As the sun shines brighter and the days grow longer, spring cleaning emerges as more than just a household chore; it’s a rejuvenating ritual that can significantly uplift your mental health. Clearing out clutter and tidying up your living space can lead to a clearer mind, reduced stress, and a sense of accomplishment. It’s a physical activity that not only revitalizes your home but also instills a feeling of renewal and order in your life. As we move into the warmer months of the year here's an invitation to embrace the therapeutic power of spring cleaning and let it sweep away the cobwebs of winter, both in your home and in your mind.

At the same time spring cleaning can feel and be a daunting task, so I came up with a method to reduce stress and have some fun while diving into those larger tasks. Afterwards I'll give some insights into how I store my wool and natural fibers to preserve their natural oils and colors.

Step 1: Set the Stage

Before you begin, create a playlist of your favorite upbeat songs. Music has the power to energize and improve your mood. As you clean, let the rhythm move you and turn your chores into a dance party!

Step 2: Make a Game Plan

Write down all the areas you want to tackle. Then, break them down into smaller tasks. For example, instead of writing “clean the kitchen,” list “organize pantry,” “wipe down appliances,” and “clean out fridge.” This makes your goals more manageable and less intimidating.

Step 3: One Room at a Time

Focus on one room before moving on to the next. This will give you a sense of accomplishment and prevent you from feeling scattered.

Step 4: Set a Timer

Decide how much time you want to spend on each task and set a timer. This creates a sense of urgency and helps you stay focused. Plus, racing against the clock can be a thrilling challenge!

Step 5: Declutter with Purpose

As you sort through your belongings, ask yourself if each item brings you joy or serves a purpose. If not, thank it for its service and say goodbye. Donating items can also give you a sense of fulfillment.

Step 6: Reward Yourself

After completing each room or task, reward yourself with a small treat. Maybe it’s a piece of chocolate, a short break, or an episode of your favorite show. This will keep your spirits high and motivate you to continue.

Step 7: Enlist Help

Cleaning is more fun with company. Invite a friend or family member to join you. You can chat, laugh, and work together, making the process feel like a social event.

Step 8: Celebrate Your Success

Once you’ve finished, take a moment to appreciate your hard work. Enjoy the cleanliness and order you’ve created. Remember, your space is a reflection of your mind, and a clear space means a clear mind.

Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be a chore. With the right approach, it can be a fun and rewarding experience. So, put on your favorite tunes, roll up your sleeves, and spring into action!

Homesteading - Storing Your Yarn

Wool yarn, with its rich colors and natural fibers, is a beloved staple of many knitters and crocheters. However, improper storage can lead to faded colors, loss of natural oils, and vulnerability to pests. In this segment/article, we'll explore the best practices for storing your wool yarn to maintain its vibrancy, preserve its natural properties, and keep it readily accessible for your creative endeavors.

1. Choose the Right Environment:

When selecting a storage space for your wool yarn, prioritize a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight. Exposure to sunlight can cause colors to fade over time, while excessive heat and moisture can promote mold and mildew growth. A temperature-controlled room or closet is ideal for maintaining the integrity of your yarn.

2. Utilize Breathable Containers:

Avoid storing your wool yarn in airtight containers, as this can trap moisture and lead to the growth of mold and mildew. Instead, opt for breathable storage options such as cotton bags, mesh bins, or open shelves. These containers allow air to circulate freely, preventing moisture buildup and preserving the natural oils in the yarn.

3. Incorporate Natural Repellents:

To safeguard your wool yarn from pests without resorting to harsh chemicals, consider incorporating natural repellents such as lavender sachets, cedar balls, or cloves. These aromatic options not only deter pests but also impart a pleasant scent to your yarn storage space. Place them strategically throughout your storage area to provide maximum protection.

4. Organize for Accessibility and Inspiration:

Organizing your wool yarn in a way that is both accessible and visually inspiring can enhance your creative process. Consider arranging your yarn by color, weight, or fiber content to facilitate easy selection when starting a new project. Transparent containers or open shelving allow you to see your yarn collection at a glance, sparking inspiration for your next masterpiece.

5. Rotate and Refresh:

Periodically assess your yarn stash to ensure that it remains in optimal condition. Rotate your yarns to prevent any one skein from being neglected or forgotten. Take this opportunity to inspect each skein for signs of damage or pests, and address any issues promptly to prevent further damage to your collection.

By following these guidelines for storing your wool yarn, you can maintain its color, preserve its natural oils, and protect it from pests while keeping it easily accessible and a source of inspiration for your creative projects. By choosing the right environment, utilizing breathable containers, incorporating natural repellents, organizing for accessibility and inspiration, and regularly rotating and refreshing your yarn stash, you can ensure that your wool yarn remains a cherished part of your crafting repertoire for years to come.
