On the Couch

1. Jelly Roll Blanket By kay Jones of the Bakery Bear YouTube channel

I completed 2.5 rows, or stripes as I've been calling them of the blanket. I added a stripe of various pueple colorways, and another of red. I added the red stripe on the other side of the blanket next to the brown stripe as I felt that red next to the purple was to jarring but next to the brown colors it is rather soothing.

At this point I have the following stripes in the blanket:

Red, brown, green, pink, blue, yellow, grey, and purple. I am currently working on one of two self striping stripes that I am placing on either side of the colorways and I feel it ties all the colorways used in the blanket together nicely.

Each stripe is 3.5" long and currently the blanket measures 29' x 39" and I before I started adding the self striping stripes I felt that it was an awkward size.

Typically baby blankets have varying measurements. A typical security sized blanket is 14" x 16-17" while a crib sized blanket is 30" x 35" and what they call a receiving blanket is 40"x40". With all these varying sizes for blankets I wanted to lean more between the crib size blanket and the receiving size. with all that in mind after I add the two stripes of self striping leftovers, I plan on adding on a crochet border.

I ordered the book "Every Which Way Crochet orders: 139 Patterns" by Edie Eckman.

2. Heart of the Forest Mitts by Sofia Kammeborn

Knit with Knit Picks Brava Sport in Cream, Eggplant (deep purple), and Hunter (hunter green) with US size 2 needles.

3. Zingy Blanket by Wool and Honey Pattern only found on Wool & Honey website

The pattern is not found on Ravelry, at least that I can tell but honestly it is pretty much the exact same pattern that I used to knit my girlfriend her baby blanket back in October called the Chevron Baby Blanket which is a free pattern as well.

The blanket is knit in Big Bad Wool the weepace base. I had never worked with this yarn before and let me tell you it is so soft and luxurious! the make up is 50% fine washable wool, 50% baby alpaca and each skein only has 95 yards. The kit came with 8 colorways to be knit up in the following order:

  • mustard

  • leaf

  • minty

  • raw white

  • ashes

  • water

  • wink

  • and great lakes

I haven't knit much further than when last I recorded. I am still on the second colorway of leaf.

4. Little Sister’s Romper by Petite Knits

Knit with my own hand dyed fingering weight yarn in the colorway Starfall. US 2.5 needles.

On the Shelf

1. Peace to Ukraine Flags Pattern from a Ukrainian designer on Etsy

Knit with Aunt Lydia's Crochet Thread in colorways Maize (yellow) and Dark Royal (deep blue) using 1.75 mm crochet hook - possibly the smallest crochet hook I have ever used.

2. Friedenstaube - Dove of Peace Mitts free pattern on Ravelry

knit using Loops and Threads Impeccable yarn in the worsted base in colorways Sapphire (deep blue), Sunny Day (Yellow), and White.

US 2 & 3 needles

3. Libby's Baby Munchkin Knits by Martha McKeon

knit on US 6 needles.

Personal Skill Set

In this episode I interview my good friend Nancy Rapkoch. Nancy has been a good friend for over 20 years. We sort of grew up together in our 20's. Learning what it meant to be grown up's with grown up responsibilities. We both bought our first homes the same year as single women we felt very grown up and at the same time the process was not an easy one to manage. We went through a lot of self discovery together around relationships, owning homes, building careers, major career changes, and our personal faith. We leaned on each other through heart break, venturing out into unknown territories of career changes, myself pursuing a masters in clinical counseling and Nancy pursuing a degree as a Physicians Assistant after many years where both of us were well established in our then careers. We grappled with spiritual pain and insecurity and chose alternate paths than either of us had ever seen as possible. We even married on the same day though thousands of miles apart and to vastly different men. My first marriage ended quickly, within a year in a half, divorcing my first husband only to find my true love waiting for me back home in Alaska. Meanwhile Nancy's marriage remains strong through the many challenges that they have faced. Throughout it all we have remained strong and steadfast friends, trusting in each other and encouraging each other to never settle or give up on those challenges we faced. Though we live thousands of miles apart she always feels near throughout this deep connection.

Nancy has a very unique and inspiring story to share around her journey to motherhood. Currently Nancy is pregnant with her second child and is one week ahead of me in that journey. She is currently building a strong practice as a Physicians Assistant in the lower 48 as a full time mother and wife. We welcome Nancy and give space for her remarkable story.

Contemplation Corner

Opening yourself up to a person takes a huge amount of courage and trust. Even if you think you know, you never really know how they will react or respond and that will always be out of your control. In keeping them out, you keep the risk of disappointment and pain out. But in keeping them out, you keep the chance of acceptance and love out, too. In the end, you really have to decide if the risk or the chance is more important to you and act accordingly.
